Sunday, December 7, 2008The Fans Don't MatterNASCAR's season-ending, self-congratulatory gala is not for the fans. Nor is it intended to be. It is the time for sponsors to get a moment in the spotlight. NASCAR sponsors and team sponsors all pose for pictures while checks are handed out. If you thought the drivers talked too much about their sponsors at the track; just wait until you hear them shill at the banquet. It is a rare awards banquet when something memorable happens. If you're spending the money you've worked so hard for, you want to feel like you're getting something valuable in return. There are plenty of track operators, right now, who can take a lesson in value from Texas Motor Speedway's Eddie Gossage. Gossage understands that race tickets are expensive...and that, if you want fans to return, making it feel like they're attending something big...something special...is important.
